How To Be More Interesting (In 10 Simple Steps)

Januar 6, 2012 in Ideas

to be interesting isn’t a job of life, it’s an option. Images & text by Jessica Hagy / Forbes.

1.Go exploring.
Explore ideas, places, and opinions. The inside of the echo chamber is where are all the boring people hang out.

2. Share what you discover.
And be generous when you do. Not everybody went exploring with you. Let them live vicariously through your adventures.

3. Do something. Anything.
Dance. Talk. Build. Network. Play. Help. Create. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you’re doing it. Sitting around and complaining is not an acceptable form of ‘something,’ in case you were wondering.

4. Embrace your innate weirdness.
No one is normal. Everyone has quirks and insights unique to themselves. Don’t hide these things—they are what make you interesting.

5. Have a cause.
If you don’t give a damn about anything, no one will give a damn about you.

6. Minimize the swagger.
Egos get in the way of ideas. If your arrogance is more obvious than your expertise, you are someone other people avoid.

7. Give it a shot.
Try it out. Play around with a new idea. Do something strange. If you never leave your comfort zone, you won’t grow.

8. Hop off the bandwagon.
If everyone else is doing it, you’re already late to the party. Do your own thing, and others will hop onto the spiffy wagon you built yourself. Besides, it’s more fun to drive than it is to get pulled around.

9. Grow a pair.
Bravery is needed to have contrary opinions and to take unexpected paths. If you’re not courageous, you’re going to be hanging around the water cooler, talking about the guy who actually is.

10. Ignore the scolds.
Boring is safe, and you will be told to behave yourself. The scolds could have, would have, should have. But they didn’t. And they resent you for your adventures.

For a Deaf Artist, The Process of Sound Art, Transformed:

The Selby Profiles Deaf Performance Artist Sun Kim’s Sonic Experiments

Cult photographer and filmmaker Todd Selby’s latest short is a revealing portrait of performance artist Christine Sun Kim. Deaf from birth, Kim turned to using sound as a medium during an artist residency in Berlin in 2008, and has since developed a practice of lo-fi experimentation that aims to re-appropriate sound by translating it into movement and vision. “It’s a lot more interesting to explore a medium that I don’t have direct access to and yet has the most direct connection to society at large,” says the artist. “Social norms surrounding sound are so deeply ingrained that, in a sense, our identities cannot be complete without it.” Selby filmed an exclusive performance from Kim in a Brooklyn studio as the artist played with field recordings of the street sounds of her Chinatown neighborhood, feedback and helium balloons, and made “seismic calligraphy” drawings from ink- and powder-drenched quills, nails and cogs dancing across paper to the vibrations of subwoofers beneath. Working with sound designer Arrow Kleeman, Selby carefully choreographed the film’s ambient score to reveal the Orange County native’s unique relationship with sound. “Her work deals with reclaiming sound because it’s a foreign world to her and one she’s not comfortable in,” explains Selby. “I wanted the film to act as an artistic conduit for her to tell her story to the world.”

How Bad Do You Want Success?

November 27, 2011 in Miscellanea

I’m not posting this video because of NFl and I’m not posting this video for the athlete. There is a very important message directly to success and finding it. You’ve heard it before: If you want to be on the same level as the people that you look up to, you’ll need to work really, really hard.

Take a look into what it takes to be successful and be inspired.

The digital revolution of the last decade has unleashed creativity and talent of people in an unprecedented way, unleashing unlimited creative opportunities. But does democratized culture mean better art, film, music and literature or is true talent instead flooded and drowned in the vast digital ocean of mass culture? Is it cultural democracy or mediocrity? This is the question addressed by PressPausePlay, a documentary film containing interviews with some of the world’s most influential creators of the digital era.

John Jay Talks about Creativity

Oktober 31, 2011 in Art, Ideas

John Jay of Wieden + Kennedy was recently named one of the most creative business people in 2011 by Fast Company. His position as W+K’s executive creative director takes him between all of the W+K offices in an effort to breed those cultures into the main headquarters in Portland.

In this video John Jay talks about his creative process. He takes a step back and approaches his interpretation of process from a wise view. What I’ve drawn mostly from this is that it’s about conversation. Most importantly it’s about listening to what people have to say and then taking that to make it relative and understandable to other people.

Otomata Music Toy

Oktober 22, 2011 in Music, technology / stuff

Otomata is a generative sequencer. It employs a cellular automaton type logic I’ve devised to produce sound events.

This set of rules produces chaotic results in some settings, therefore you can end up with never repeating, gradually evolving sequences. Go add some cells, change their orientation by clicking on them, and press play, experiment, have fun.

Animoog is the first professional synthesizer designed for the iPad. Powered by Moog’s new Anisotropic Synthesis Engine, Animoog captures the vast sonic vocabulary of Moog synthesizers and applies it to the moderntouch surface paradigm, enabling any user to quickly sculpt incredibly fluid and dynamic sounds that live breathe, and evolve as you play them.

ARC & Monome

September 23, 2011 in Art, Music

Here’s a video of the Arc and Monome in action:
a micro-looper. eight samplers, corresponding to columns of the grid.
record by holding second-from-bottom key.
focus arc to column by pushing bottom key.
left knob is loop selection. turn to move selection,
push-turn to resize selection.
right knob is volume. turning changes velocity, not position,
so a tremelo effect is easily achieved. pushing down stops the spin,
like a turntable.
third key up is mute/unmute. top rows transpose up/down by octaves.
top rows meter sound levels.

peaking lights – Sound Builders

September 23, 2011 in Video

I found vbs TV accidentally – great shows!!!

and I love this description…

… We travel to Madison, Wisconsin to visit Peaking Lights,
a married musical duo famed for their pulsating looped-rhythm
tracks composed on re-purposed scraps, stereos, and lo-fi gear.
We watch as husband and wife prepare for tour by paring their
studio down to the bare essentials needed to produce Peaking Lights’
distinctive sound. While we were hanging out, we got a peek into Aaron’s
completely untechnical, yet highly rigorous process of Frankensteining
long forgotten consumer electronics. Using the most unassuming hunks
of wood, metal, and plastic, Peaking Lights produce surprising and
highly personal results …
